New research indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
