No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
