Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
