Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
